Unit 9 Assignment

Unit 9 Final Project
Introduction
It is important for health and wellness professionals to develop psychologically, spiritually, and physically because it is learning and developing the entire being.  Developing in each area will allow a health and wellness professional to become more aware of how to educate clients and to truly be on the same level.  In order to achieve the goals I have set for myself, I need to develop psychologically and spiritually.  I am striving to become more in tune with my positive mental thoughts and allowing my emotions to surface.  I have goals to implement meditation into my daily routine and to continue healthy eating habits and regular exercise.  This will encourage a sounder mind, body, and spirit, which will ultimately provide a balance psychologically, spiritually, and physically, (Dacher, 2006).

Assessment
In regards to assessing my health in each of the three main aspects: psychologically, spiritually, and physically, it is important to maintain patience.  I have assessed my health in each area and I feel quite confident about the physical aspect.  However, spiritually and psychologically, I need some work. There are sources of suffering and distress because of some life circumstances; however, I rely on meditation and relaxation to relieve that negativity from my mind.  Physically speaking, I am content in that aspect.  I maintain a proper diet and exercise regime each week that assists in providing adequate nutrition and physical activity for my body to be able to function properly.

Goal development
Three goals for myself in each area, physically, psychologically, and spiritually were somewhat difficult to define.  A physical goal I have is to run a half marathon by the fall of this year.  Also, I plan to continue eating clean and exercising regularly.  Psychologically, I would like to incorporate more meditation and subtle-mind exercises (Dacher, 2006).  This will allow my mind and body to de-stress and let more positivity in.  In turn, this will create a calm existence.  In the spiritual aspect, I need to be more focused on the positive aspects of my life.  I also need to learn forgiveness.

Practices for personal health
Taking it day by day is the first strategy to implement in order to foster growth physically, psychologically, and spiritually.  Realizing and understanding that each aspect takes practice and patience will allow myself to become successful at reaching optimal personal growth.  Physically, I will be training for the half marathon by running each day.  I will also continue weight training as I have done for the past fifteen years of my life.  Psychologically speaking, meditation and yoga are two examples of how I can increase the level of psychological growth.  Spiritually, I will implement more volunteer work.  This will allow growth in the area that needs the most.

Commitment

In order to assess my progress, I will keep a daily/weekly log of each focus area.  Each week I will increase the distance I run in order to maintain my goal of reaching a marathon.  In regards to clean eating and exercising regularly, I will plan recipes and block out a time in each day for a workout.  In order to maintain my long-term practices for health and wellness, I will use daily blogs that will assist in keeping myself in check.  I will check-in daily and record each session of my diet and my exercise routine.  I will engage in physical activity at the local gym and workout with another individual that will also assist in maintaining my long-term practices.

  1. Hello Kelly,
It was interesting to read your blog about how there are certain areas that need improvement and how you will assist those needs and still maintain the god part of health and wellness you already have. You included a very important word in you blog that means a lot in the health and wellness field of work, patience. Patience is extremely important when it comes to improving ones’ health and wellness. In the 21 years of life that I have lived I have never heard of a onetime workout that will give immediate results. I was once a boy who was a twig and wanted more muscle on my bone and so I began to try weightlifting in middle school. I tried it for a couple of days and gave up on it because the following days I was sore and felt there was more pain then gain. As I got older and into high school I took some health classes that gave me information about exercise and how soreness is a good sign if a good workout. The final three years of high school I participated in an Advanced Weights Class and now can look back and see the gain I received from when I began to the final day of the course. Through college up to this point I kept a good routine until I got a job. When I got a job I lost eight hours out of the day and so now my day is cut in half. I do get to the gym once in a while like maybe once a week or twice if I’m lucky but there is a stage I am currently going through where I don’t feel like going to the gym because I am getting nothing out of it since I’m only going once in a while. I’m thinking if I keep a happy mindset maybe this nasty thought will go away and I will be better off in life. I’m thinking meditation/ love-kindness will help me overcome this dilemma but I am not sure. Do you have any suggestions?

    God Bless,
    Cameron

  3. Kelly,
These are great goals! A half marathon? Wow, good for you! I can relate to you in wanting to implement more meditation exercises into my life. That is one goal I have for myself too and to take up more yoga classes. I also want to become a more stress free and positive person. Through this class I have been able to see how beneficial these exercises are and cant wait to see where I am 6 months from now if I keep these practices up. Good luck to you!!

  4. Kelly,
It looks like you have developed a great assessment of yourself and an even better plan. I like how you noted the need for patience and taking it day to day. That is a great way to look at it. There is no need to overwhelm yourself, just take it as it comes and your goals will be met in no time at all. Then on top of you will be doing a self check with your personal blogs. I would have never thought of that. Holding yourself accountable like that will more than likely keep you motivated. I wish you all the luck in the pursuit of your goals.

  5. Gersom, I enjoyed your blog As I read it, I am encouraged keep in step with my own daily regime. I like that you express how we need to develop patience and take it day be day. Over the years I have kept up with my physical exercising also. It does not seem to be a problem because over time it became part of my lifestyle. The same with my spiritual aspect. I faithfully pray attend church, it is how I receive my personal spiritual growth, However, even though I have practice meditation in the past, I have not been as consistent as I would like to be. Taking this course has helped me to become more dedicated to meditation practice. It works. I find that guided meditation is the best thing for me mind/body/spirit. Moreover, I am encouraged because the more I meditate the more I become in tuned with me and aware of who I am and the gifts that I possess as a natural healer. Thank you for your post. It really did encourage me. Best of Blessing to you and your endeavors in the Health and Wellness field. Michelle
